Energy Drinks and Sports Drinks: The Formulation Science Behind Performance Beverages

21 February 2026 ARHAS Editorial Team

Energy drinks and sports drinks are the fastest-growing performance categories in Indian beverages — and the most demanding to develop. Success requires balancing efficacy, taste, stability and strict regulatory limits.

Energy Drinks vs Sports Drinks — Not the Same Product

  • Energy drinks deliver stimulation: caffeine, taurine, B-vitamins and glucose. Consumed for alertness and lifestyle.
  • Sports drinks deliver rehydration: electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium) and carbohydrates in isotonic balance. Consumed around physical activity.

Formulation Challenges

  1. Regulatory limits: FSSAI caps caffeine content and mandates specific warnings and labelling for caffeinated energy drinks. Formulations must be designed to the regulation from day one.
  2. Ingredient stability: Vitamins degrade with heat, light and time — overages and protective processing keep label claims true through shelf life.
  3. Taste engineering: Caffeine is bitter, electrolytes are salty; flavour systems must mask both while staying refreshing.
  4. Osmolality: Sports drinks must hit isotonic targets for genuine rehydration performance.
  5. Process selection: Hot-fill, tunnel pasteurization or aseptic — each affects actives differently.

The Packaging Factor

Cans dominate energy drinks for image and carbonation retention; PET leads sports drinks for gym-bag convenience. Both need light and oxygen management to protect actives.

ARHAS formulates and manufactures energy drinks, sports drinks and functional beverages — with laboratory validation, pilot production and FSSAI-compliant labelling — turning performance concepts into shelf-ready brands.
